Mental Illness Awareness Week will be recognized this year on October 4 – 10, 2020. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has devoted the first full week in October to bring awareness to mental illness. In 1990, Congress established this week in October as Mental Illness Awareness Week. Every year there are activities and meetings that promote awareness of mental health issues and treatment. NAMI arranges many of the activities for the week, but local businesses and individuals can take part in them or sponsor their own. 1. Mental Illness Awareness Week Reduces the Mental Illness Stigma
Many individuals who struggle with their mental health can feel like others will judge them. This is slowly starting to end, but it’s vital to keep pushing for continued de-stigmatization. When people feel there isn’t going to be a stigma surrounding mental illness, they will more readily accept seeking treatment and help.
Mental Illness Awareness Week helps reduce some of the stigmas by acknowledging the problems, discussing how mental health issues require treatment like any other disease, offering treatment options and hope, and not shaming those who have mental health issues.
